Podcast Episode 11: “The Warrens”

I’m so excited that the podcast is back! Episode 11 is now available on iTunes, Stitcher & SoundCloud. Or you can click play right above and listen right here.

Episode 11 features psychic research couple Ed & Lorraine Warren whose work has been featured in cult horror movies like The Amityville Horror, The Conjuring and Annabelle. In Part I, I discuss the lives and career of the Warrens and in Part II, I’m joined by Hex Files’ contributor Craig to talk about our experience meeting Lorraine Warren and touring the Occult Museum.

As I promised in the episode, here are some of the photos I took while touring the Occult Museum. Light was certainly not on my side, so I apologize that most of the photos are poor quality but they’re still pretty awesome!

Nick Castle Will Return for ‘Halloween’ Reboot

Nick Castle, the actor who played Michael Myers in the original Halloween film, will don the iconic white William Shatner mask once more in the highly-anticipated reboot hitting theaters next October.

The new movie will act as a direct sequel to the original film, and Castle is just one of several people from the 1978 film who are on board for the reboot. John Carpenter, director of the original film, is serving as an executive producer as well as providing the film’s soundtrack. Jamie Lee Curtis will return to her role as Laurie Strode, despite Laurie’s apparent death in the 2002 film Halloween: Resurrection.

Castle, who is now 70 years old, will be assisted by stunt performer and actor James Jude Courtney.

Your Guide to the Most Anticipated Horror & Sci-Fi Films Coming in 2018

A new year brings so much new: new calendar, new goals and of course, new movies. 2018 is going to be huge when it comes to new horror and sci-fi movies, including some additions to our favorite franchises. Check out this list of highly anticipated films to look forward to in the upcoming year, in order of release:

Insidious: The Last Key

Throughout the Insidious franchise, Dr. Elise Rainier has helped people battle some serious demonic forces, but this time the person she will have to protect is herself as she deals with some of the most evil entities yet in her own childhood home. You can catch this in theaters starting January 5, 2018.

Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built

Sarah Winchester is the heiress of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and she is convinced she is being haunted by the souls of those who fell to her family’s firearms and despite his skepticism, psychiatrist Eric Price will soon realize there may truly be a paranormal force at hand. This film will be released February 2, 2018.

The Strangers: Prey at Night

The follow-up film to the 2008 slasher film will feature the same group of masked murderers but this time they’re terrorizing a new family. You’ll never want to take a family road trip again after seeing this film. The release date is March 9, 2018.

A Quiet Place

This family appears to be living a quiet, simple life in the woods, but their reasoning is more than just preference: their silence is a method to protect them from a looming force that acts on even the slightest sound. The tagline for this film is “If they can’t hear you, they can’t hunt you.” This film will be released April 6, 2018.

The Purge: The Island

This summer will see the release of the 4th installment of the Purge franchise. Despite being the 4th film to be released, it will be a prequel to the other movies by depicting the very first Purge night. Given the political content of the film, its fitting that it will premiere on July 4, 2018.

Move over, Annabelle! Valak, the demon nun from the Conjuring 2, proved to be such an iconic horror character that she will be featured in her own spinoff this upcoming summer. The film’s plot is focused on a priest’s journey to investigate the mysterious suicide of a young nun. The film will be released July 13, 2018.

Halloween

It looks like Laurie Strode managed to somehow survive her apparent death in the 8th installment of the Halloween franchise, Halloween: Resurrection, as Jamie Lee Curtis has confirmed she will return for a final confrontation with the infamous Michael Myers in franchise’s next film. The film will include John Carpenter as an executive producer and creative consultant. Arguably the most anticipated horror film of the new year, it will hit theaters October 19, 2018.

The X-Files Will Return for its 11th Season

2018 is really going to bring it in the sci-fi and horror category, including Fox bringing the X-Files back for its 11th season! The new season will mark 25 years of Agents Scully and Mulder making us want to believe. Check out the teaser trailer below for the upcoming season, premiering January 3rd.

Stranger Things: A Bad Lip Reading

We don’t always take ourselves super seriously over here at the Hex Files, and to prove it, here’s the Bad Lip Reading crew taking on the happenings in our favorite little sci-fi town of Hawkins, Indiana. Note: this features scenes from season one earlier, so don’t worry about spoilers if you haven’t gotten around to season two quite yet.

Celebrate Krampusnacht with “A Krampus Carol”!

As you may already know from listening to the Krampus episode of the podcast, December 5th is the day the ancient Austrian celebration of Krampus is held. You may also recall I promised to share a strange short about Krampus narrated by Anthony Bourdain, so in the spirit of Krampusnacht, enjoy “A Krampus Carol”!

2017 Spooky Holiday Gift Guide

Even though I saw Christmas decorations out before Halloween was even over, I am officially okay with accepting Christmas into my life now that Thanksgiving is over. So, with that being said, I’ve put together a handy guide to help you figure out what you’re going to gift the other strange people in your life this year.

1. Gremlins Sweater

Middle of Beyond is the best of the best when it comes to strange gifts; I would know as one of my prized possessions is one of their amazing, super-cozy blankets. If this sweater feels anything like that blanket, it will be the best gift you have ever given. You can purchase it at the Middle of Beyond website.

3. Hunt a Killer Subscription

Hunt-A-Killer-Episode-2-June-2017-0003-733x587-1

If a deck of playing cards isn’t satisfactory enough for the true crime fan on your list, consider giving a gift that keeps giving. Hunt a Killer is a monthly subscription box described as “a dream come true for any true crime fan” and is also said to be “seemingly real” and “not for the faint of heart.” This ain’t your momma’s Clue board game, people. Each month, the recipient will get to play detective and solve an intricate case. Apply for a subscription at huntakiller.com.

You can buy this 18″x24″ Child’s Play print and much more at studiohousedesigns.com.

6. TokyoMilk Gift Set

TKMD-Collection1_large

I have been using products from the TokyoMilk Dark collection for years now and I’ve never looked back. What first attracted me to this line of products was the beautiful, gothic aesthetic of the packaging and the scents are just as great. This gift set includes 1 eau de parfum, 1 shea butter hand cream and 1 lip elixir in my favorite scent from the collection, Tainted Love. It’s the perfect gift for the witchy woman on your list. It can be purchased through tokyomilk.com.

Give the gift of dark Christmas with their holiday collection. Vom Krampus is described as a bright and brisk lend of candied peppermint and vanilla cream, while Black Forest is said to remind you of winter walks in the forests with scents of birch, eucalyptus and pine cone. Discover your local Krampusnacht

If you listened to the finale episode of the podcast’s first season, you’ll recall we discussed Krampusnacht, an ancient Austrian tradition occurring each year in early December where townspeople dress as St. Nick’s evil sidekick, Krampus, and scare the living shit out of local children.

As promised in that episode, I did my best to compile some of the Krampus-related festivals that will be coming up throughout the country. Check it out:

Asbury Park, NJ

Asbury Park will be hosting their 3rd annual Krampus event, Krampus AP, on December 1st and 2nd at Paranormal Books & Curiosities on Cookman Avenue. They’ll kick off the festivities on Friday with Pictures with Yeti and Krampus followed by the Krampus Film Festival. On Saturday, they’ll have events throughout the day, including Karoling with Krampus, Running with the Krampusses and Crowning of the Krampus.

Dallas, TX

The Vampire Court of Dallas will be hosting Krampus Nacht on December 17th at the Church on Swiss Avenue. This event will feature main stage performers, DJs, Christmas horror movies, vendors for all your spooky gift-giving needs and even a Krampus costume contest. As if there isn’t enough holiday spirit to enjoy, they will also be doing a toy drive for New Beginning Center of Garland, which helps those struggling with domestic violence.

Bloomington, IN

Bloomington will host the Krampus Rampage and Bazaar on December 2nd. The event begins with the Bazaar, an all-ages event which features sack races, Krampus mask making, plus much more. At the Bazaar, you can pick out your “naughty” or “nice” sticker before you head over to the Rampage. Wear a “nice” sticker and you may receive candy from St. Nicholas or an angel, but if wear a “naughty” sticker prepare for Krampus to come for you.

Detroit, MI

Detroit will host Krampus Night on December 1st, 2017. Described as a “holiday-ish charity extravaganza,” Krampus Night features a ton of different events, including a Toys for Tots drive as well as a a Burners Without Borders Detroit canned drive to help feed the homeless this holiday season. In addition to the charitable portion of Krampus Night, guests can also indulge in a Naughty List Bazaar and Wreck the Halls Exhibition, plus much more!

Fieldsboro, NJ

Fieldsboro will be hosting their first ever Krampus Bazaar on December 9th. It will feature a variety of events for guests, including music, dark art, unique gifts/oddities and of course, a Krampus costume contest. It will also feature sideshow performances by Phialdelphia’s own Sickart Sideshow.

Los Angeles, CA

On December 2nd, Los Angeles will host its 5th annual Krampus Ball at Alpine Village on Torrance Boulevard. The Ball will feature a performance by Krammpstein (also known as metal band Rammstein dressed in leather, fur, horns and masks to pay tribute to the infamous Christmas devil Krampus). Guests can also expect to see an appearance by Krampus Los Angeles in their premiere seasonal outing. Themed costumes are encouraged (though not required)!

If you can’t make the Ball, LA will also host the free 5th annual Krampuslauf (Krampus Run) on December 14th. Dozens of Krampusses will pursue the brave, while children and more timid adults will be protected by St. Nicholas. If that isn’t enough for you, there will be an (also free) after party beginning at 9PM at The Lash nightclub.

Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphians can attend Krampusnacht Philadelphia, which will premiere on December 10th at District N9NE on North 9th Street. It will feature a marketplace where you can complete your holiday shopping for all the strange and eccentric people on your list this year. Guests can also anticipate getting “thrilled and chilled” by a variety of live entertainment as well as their very own freakshow, all for an affordable $5.

If you can’t make it to the event on December 10th, Philadelphia will also host Parade of Spirits (formerly known as Krampuslauf Philadelphia) at Liberty Lands Park on December 17th starting at 3:30 PM. They encourage guests to come dressed as Krampus or their favorite mythological shadow side creature from any tradition. Sounds like the Christmas version of Halloween to me!

Portland, OR

On December 10th, Portland will host its 8th annual Krampus Lauf beginning at 4PM at Sewallcrest Park. Those who would like to participate are encouraged to dress up in masks, fur, chains, claws and horns. Once dressed, event-goers can walk down the boulevard chanting the Krampus Carol and spreading the “mirthful terror” of the season.

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. will be hosting its annual Krampusnacht DC on December 2, 2017 at Gallery O on H. It is a holiday event and charity walk benefiting Santa’s Cause DC, a project of Family Maters of Greater Washington which aids local foster children. Get your scare on for a good cause!

If you’re aware of any upcoming Krampus festivities that we haven’t mentioned, please fill us in by sending an e-mail to admin@hexfilescollective.com so that we can include it in our list!
